Art Medias of Painting and Drawing
The central use of art materials makes what happens in an art therapy session different from all other psychotherapy approaches.
Painting as Therapy
Materials include watercolors, finger paints, acrylics, oils, and inks and a tool (brush, pen, or even hands) with which to paint and includes a surface such as a canvas, watercolor paper, board, or panels. Painting can also take place electronically on a computer screen through digital painting software.
Drawing as Therapy
Materials include pencils, crayons, markers, chalk, charcoal, and oil pastels, and includes a surface (usually various types of paper) on which to draw. Drawing also takes place on computer laptops and even cellular phones with the use of specialized applications and software. Drawing is the most widely used medium for art therapy assessment and treatment because of its portability, ease of use, and easily standardized qualities.
